Me and a friend just stumbled on this site late yesterday. I found this all within 20 minutes and had to leave as it was getting dark. While digging plenty of china brick iron and mortar. Doing some research today to find out the history of this site. Anyway a buddy told me the one long brass piece was from a gun, and the Eagle looks to be pewter. I love finding the Hibernia but this one is really worn so I could not get a date. The one big buckle is either all iron or completely covered. First what is the Eagle and is that one piece a gun part?

It is a gun part, and a cool one too.... It's the side plate from a Brown Bess musket.

That's awesome. never found a gun part before. I googled Brown Bess Musket and it looks to have three different models. Any ideas if it is the first or second model?

Can you take a pic of the other side of it with a ruler, sitting as it would on the musket? Also is it flat or rounded on the other side? It looks like a First Model Long Land pattern, but I can't be certain....

Hello here are some pictures with the a ruler for ID. Also took a photo of the makersmark. Also just found out the Pewter item is a 1812 cockade eagle, never seen one of those before so another first for me. Thanks for the help

Thanks for the new pics, your side plate is flat rather than rounded on one side which will make it a Second Model side plate. It will date from 1756 into the 1790's when the Third Model came around. It's most likely going to have come from a "Short Land Pattern" musket. Nice find, I'd love to dig one.

Awesome find!

Those scratch marks that look like 'IIIV' are from the gunsmith. All the parts of that gun have the same marks so he can make sure they all go back together. These guns did not typically have interchangeable parts.
