Military Button ? State of Maryland?

Found this button and I can't determine its type or age. It looks like a State of Maryland, but it has Latin? lettering on the button edge. Manufactured by Scovil, Watebury, Conn. Thanks for your assistance.

Per Nhbenz and MechTech, this is a New York City uniform button, listed in Albert's book as #NY 103.

Buttons from a New York City Uniform. 10 large buttons (approx. 1" diameter) and 4 smaller buttons (approx. 1/2" diameter) Marked Scovill Mfg. Co. Waterbury CT on rear. As found condition. It has been suggested to us that these buttons are from a New York City Police Dress Uniform. $50.00
