Have owned a garrett gti 2500 and hated it. Have a tesoro silver umax and love it because it's simple and easy to use. I have 650 to spend. I live in Nj and mainly like to coin hunt and search for jewelry. I go to the shore maybe 10 times a year. Would like something light and simple. Any thoughts?

U can pick up a nice used safari for about thag range. I have one ans absolutely love it, it just sniffs the silver outta the ground.

No, stay away from the Minelabs, they cant find nothing and will pull your shoulder out of its socket with an hour's hunt. Those of us that use them never find anything and are really just Neanderthal chest thumpers that find stuff because of the shear # of holes that we randomly dig. Get a nice light metal detector at Walmart or Radio Shack instead!

(seriously, I've often wondered what my find rate would be for randomly dug holes in a park or schoolyard. I think you could pay off the US national debt with just the dropped coinage currently in the ground)

The 305, 505, 705 are the lightest minelab detectors the others are a little on the heavy side but I have a se pro that I love I hunt old home sites with it I would say swinging it on a beach I would have to take some breaks but it loves silver coins I will tell ya that. The explorer, e-trac, safari detectors are not simple to learn if your looking for something that is easy I wouldn't recommend one of the three that I just stated, but like I said the 305, 505, 705 are all light weight machines & have been told they do a decent job. I haven't used one of those models myself but read post of a lot of people that do use them & they say they are a good machine. If you didn't like the weight of the 2500 garrett then I know you wont like the minelab models that I have stated above with the weight but if you want depth then weight usely comes with depth just in my opinion hope this helps Gl :dontknow:

I have a 705 snd love it, its light and if itvsaids its a dime or quarter then it is! Going monday to try out my new 6in digger coil ....cannot wait.

The Xterra series 305, 505, 705 are all very light weight machines. I have a 705 and really love it. I have found a lot of really good stuff with that detector. None of the Minelabs are gonna come to close to being light weight though........say like a Tesoro? Your uMax is much lighter........trade offs with everything.

@ 2.9lbs the 705GP is as light and capable as any, and more flexible (auto/adjustable) than any. With 12 available coils in three frequencies, along with it's laundry list of features, it's ability to be tailored to the specific task is something that no other machine can match.

Longhair is right! Buy from bart's

Longhair summed up what I would recommend... As usual he is spot on with his advice!

The X-Terra 705 is a lot of detector for the $$$... And you can tailor it to your needs with the available coils. Feel free to give me a call if I can help... :)

Minelab X-Terra 705 - flexibilty to hunt anything!

Longhair is very very helpful to us on the forums with his knowledge!

Be glad to help you with any questions you may have. We swing them all!

I had a Minelab 705 GP and it was a great detector !! I don't think you would be disappointed because it was very light, easy to use, versatile, and had good depth.

You just can't beat the X-Terra! With the ability to change frequencies with a simple coil change, there is really no competition at that price point. I have an X-Terra 505 and it simply BLOWS away the Vaquero I had! Don't make an expensive mistake like I did, pay a couple bucks more for an X-Terra and an additional coil and forget the Outlaw. Sure the Outlaw is a bargain with it's 3 coils, but Minelab is the Cadillac of metal detectors. I'm so glad I drank the Minelab Kool-Aid, my only regret is not buying one sooner! Good luck. HH

I've not put the 705 through its paces, but I think that it is good for an all-around detector and under $900. So far I am happy with its performance.
