Detector(s) used
Minelab Excal 1000, Tesoro Silver Umax, Tiger Shark and Whites MXT.
I use my Excal 1000 all the time on land. It works great in the city park and I've found my share of silver. As there's no screen, get to know the tones well. Should work fine for relics. Gets a bit heavy after a while though.

The factory shaft will kill you, buy a straight shaft they help to fight the fatigue factor

What kind of straight shaft do you recommend?

I love my Excalibur II 800 so far hunting land. Tones are a breeze to learn. Anderson Detector Shafts has some nice selections. One is a simple and inexpensive back extension off your factory shaft that puts the goods behind your elbow. I thought to get one till somebody bought me a SCUBA shaft and I can use my other extensions to use it land hunting as well.

This sounds good, I hate to miss a day due to rain. I do have a straight shaft and I love it. I also am aware that it gets heavy, lol. Oh yeah, the ultimate shoulder work out, lol. Who needs an excersise tape? Anyway, I will bring this detector if it looks like rain. Thanks alot. Any more feedback or experiences would be great, too!

I have a florida straight shaft and some other have an anderson shaft. there are probably more brands anything =========== is probably better on land than factory unit

I use to use my Excal 1000 on land all the time with no problems... I would also suggest using a harness, I can hunt all day with any machine using my harness. I always use one on my Excal and Sovereign GTs...

You can also hip mount the control unit to make the shaft real light.

Sounds good everyone, I appreciate all of the feedback. It'll give me an option if it rains to hard. These scheduled hunts go on rain or shine, with set days and I hate to waste an opportunity. Thanks again.

Try this....

Hunt in the pin point (all metal) mode.

Seeing how you are digging relics, all metal would be the way to go.

Run your threshold up and notice any changes in the threshold tone.

You will be amazed at the depth you will get using this method.

That sounds good Steve, thanks. I am hoping for good weather, but April is unpredictable, so trying to prepare for the worst. Thanks again!

I have very recent "novice" experience relic hunting using the Minelab Excalibur II. My 10 year old went with me to a club hunt on 70 acres of farm land. I let him use my Explorer II since I felt that it would be lighter and easier for him to understand. I honestly was apprehensive that I might be sacrificing my success for his inclusion. Turns out not only did I have a great time but the Excalibur II located two very nice flat buttons both at approximately 8 inches as well as other relics. I thought this worth mentioning since only a few of the other 30 hunters (using all kinds of machines) found anything worth mentioning let alone civil war period buttons. I prefer my Explorer II on land but I would use the Excalibur II to relic hunt without reservation.

best of luck,
