I will just start driving around downtown til I see some orange barricade tape, that always signifies some road or sidewalk construction. I like to go on the weekends because noone is downtown and if they are they dont say nothing to ya for detecting. Another idea is to get on Google earth and start checking places where the interstate came through and cut off roads, there is usually always a lot or two where they tore down some houses on the dead end. Also if you are brave enough you can always find some old condemed houses in the bad neighborhoods, pick and choose your spots carefully though, and dont hunt them for too long and you should be fine...HH

Dr. E* welcome to the forum. I have to agree about constuction (Probably one of the best places to find older coins in shallow dirt) and definately about research. Research Dallas and especially smaller towns near you. Find out where old hang outs where from say 1910's and up. Old swimming holes, drive in theaters, old playgrounds, old schools. Perhaps you will find one in your research that someone has missed.

Find out which of your stores on in the suburbs ( I imagine most of downtown is concrete by now, or if nothing else the dirt areas are probably well taken care of places that they will not allow MDing?) are older and if they have grass lots near them. Abandoned lots where homes used to be. If you are the type of person who doesn't mind taking to strangers, not in bad parts of town, I would talk to the older peps in community centers, retirement homes. I find that they very much enjoy the company. I have not MDed for a very long time, but as a young teenage I lived near an old folks home as its called here. My best friends mother used to work there along with some of my family. Keep in mind I did not need to have those family members and friends working there, here if I went to the reception places and said I wanted to volunteer to meet and talk to the residents, they would always have people that wanted to talk.

In fact I am getting ready to start going back. I have not visited very often since I returned from the military, but I do plan to go back. I often found that they were a treasure of information about the way things used to be and the hang outs when they were teenagers. Long ago I went because I enjoyed talking and I found an audience of peps that loved to talk as well. I learned a great deal from them about a great many things in life. I am sure that lots of their wisdom helped me later during my 13 years as a soldier, and helps me now from time to time. Sure some of them are unable to talk and are in pretty bad shape. But you might be surprised how many still have perfectly good working minds and are very happy to see someone to talk to.

Back to the library. Hopefully they have a good historical section. One could compare pics from way back to what it is now. Dallas / Ft. Worth is pretty big I admit. I don't know how much luck you could have downtown. A lot if you can catch construction / sidewalk tear-ups I am sure. However I would say pick a suburb and look at that library.

I lived in Ft. Hood for 1 year 1992. I wish I could help you out by what I saw but I was not a MDer back then. I made 3 trips to Dallas. Tourist of course so nothing in my memory could help on that one.

I do wish you good luck. I did not really find anything going to the local schools and city parks. We'll I did find a little bit of jewelry in woodchip playgrounds but no silver coinage. I did however find some silver coinage with permissions on private lands.
