It's what is left of a rat-tail file. They don't last too long in the weather or in the ground.

It does look like a file with the tang broke off. But it is not a rat tail file. They are round.

is it a chisel?

I believe it is called a --deleted-- file. :icon_thumright:
Broken Knee

Sorry, I didn't think the proper name for this file would get deleted. I guess some people are offended by the names of tools ?
It was not my intention to offend anyone please accept my sincere apology.
Broken Knee

My bad, Brokenknee is correct. Bast-ard file, not rat tail. Still, it's a file.

i think a wood handled chisel would be more accurate as it looks like the end is sharpened up. i think they called them a slick or slicker.
