I went back to my old reliable site last Sunday. Only 2 blocks from the courthouse square, the very small wooded hill appears completely unassuming. About 3 years ago, I started detecting the top of the hill which is a small park. An antebellum home stands at the very crest of the hill. As I started detecting the side of the hill leading down to a major road, I was surprised as I started finding shot civil war bullets of various 3 ring varieties, pistol bullets, round balls and a few musketoons. I even found a few period shell casings. The hill was also covered with trash (mainly broken whiskey bottles) but also a sample of coins and assorted objects covering just about every decade since the civil war. The oldest coin from the hill was an 1864 Indian Head Penny I found just lying on the surface of the hillside.
I had not used my new Garrett detector on the hill yet and for an hour I decided to give it a try Sunday. I found 5 of the bullets in one large hole a little deeper than I have found the bullets previously. The .69s appear to be wormed rather than shot as they have the circle around the tops and they appear to be in relatively good shape. These 6 bring my total of shot bullets to 116.
The hill is near a small creek and a flat area so it is possible it was a shooting range. However, my friend Abe suspects that being so close to town it may also have been the spot where soldiers unloaded their weapons before entering camp. I am researching this further. Thanks fo reading
