Went detecting for an hour on the same property, but this time down near a dry creek that used to be a lot fuller in the 1950s and prior. This land was Chickasaw Indian territory until the 1830s when it was opened to settlement by U.S. folks. This particular "forty" has probably never been more than farmland, initially worked by slaves and then sharecroppers. Cotton and corn, mostly. This spot didn't see any Civil War skirmishes, but there was a Union cavalry ride across the area (unknown path but certainly within +/- a mile).
I think this first item is half of a lead round ball mold? The last pic shows what I *think* it is:
(Not sure who to attribute the above pic to, but I will certainly do so if told.)
This next item looks like it could have been from part of horse equipment? I'm not a very good electrolysist! The ring was so rusted that not much of it remains. The thicker side is probably more like how it looked originally. The ring fits into the straight piece at two different places, that is, the ring is slightly sprung/twisted to fit into the straight piece but they don't exactly align. Each end of the ring has its own hole...there's not just one hole that goes all the way through the straight piece.
The third and last relic is a triangular shaped piece of iron or steel. The electrolysis revealed that both sides still have remnants of sort of a flat/polished/glossiness where the original surface was. One side is cut at an angle, and the other side has sort of a sheen about a half inch from the tip, along the whole tip, just like you see on a steel blade. My best guess is a broken corner off of a mattock? If so, what do you think it tells me about the land? How old was the mattock if it was this thick? The last pic shows an antique mattock similar to what I'm imagining. Found it on etsy, and I'll attribute the image if I learn whose it is.
