For two weeks its been dry hot and just plain unhealthy weather!
With a break in the heat, my son and I ventured out with shovels and jackhammers in hand to a vacant lot permission.

We didn't stay long because of the hard digging but, my son managed to pull this
really cool Motorman Rail Road button with a pin still attached to the back!
Any ideas on why the pin is on the button?
We believe it is from the late 1800's

It cleaned up real nice with a toothpick. We then hit it with some Ammonia followed by
a little nose grease to highlight the letters.

My best find of the day was this 1865 Indian.
Again pretty toasty but that's the nature of Indians!

We are expecting some rain this week so we hope to go back pretty quick to do some real digging!

HH everyone!

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Congrats on the cool button and old IH cent! :occasion14:

very sweet cool button and an IHP to boot, what's not to like?

Maybe the button had fallen off of the coat at one time, and they cut a little hole in the fabric to allow the button shank to go thru the hole, and secured it on the opposite side with the cotter pin. At that point, you could still push the button thru the button hole and the cotter pin would have held it together, (although it would have been lose, it would have worked in a pinch). The button may have then fallen off the coat a second time with the pin attached, waiting for your son to find it ! Whatever the reason for the little cotter pin, that is an excellent button find and congrats to your son.

I personally prefer the button. I have found an exact same one at a mid to late 1800's site last year. Congratulations!
