I have a couple of these mugs. I don't think they come with tops, and I'm not sure of the age, but one of them says Made in Germany on the bottom. Hope that helps a little.

Probably a beer stein but don't have a clue about the crown and initials. Monty

Thanks PBK...yikes on the 5 liter...I noticed the crown is a different design, wonder if it could be dated by it...

Nice job with the id, as usual, PBK. I went to the Hofbrauhaus (or, is there more than one?) in Germany on a vacation with my family. They had shelves filled with beer steins that were owned by their customers. Pretty cool, stop by the pub and use your own, sometimes really elaborate, mug. When I saw the range of sizes, I remember wondering how they heck they knew what to charge for their beer. Unless they had a meter on the tap, maybe this was the beginning of the Supersize trend. Bigger mug=cheaper buzz.

I think Hofbrauhaus means a brewery. ??

Yea it is used for restaurants, breweries, pubs, bars, etc... I think there is at least one in every city in every state.

That used to be true in California, but they've been replaced with Tacerias.
