Hey guys found this on a trip to Austria. Found a few scrappy ones but this was the gem.. also if you could give me a age and id for the bell, I'd appreciate it. I believe the coin to be a Claudius II which would mean it was made around 269. Please verify if this is correct. Also would like to know who's on the reverse. Ty.

Banner find cant help with the ID being my town was founded in 1826 lol That is really cool being that old and looks to be in awesome shape for its age. Amazing I dont think I would have left if I found something like that. Smokin find!!!!!!Thanks for sharing it and stay safe out there. Tommy

It looks like the Roman goddess Concordia on the reverse. You can read some of the letters, especially “CORDI” at the 9 o clock position. I found a similar one online but it listed the emperor as Aurelian although Claudius also issued ones with Concordia on the reverse

The website wildwinds.com has much more useful info on these coins

Cru'dad's thoughts:

''It looks like a CIIG but the Reverse is CONCORDIA MILIT which CIIG has no record for in RIC etc. Valerian I and Aurelian do have that reverse with the closest bust being the former.
So I suspect it is either a mule with a Claudius II Bust and another emperor’s Reverse or probably a BARBAROUS from AD 275-285.''

My first thought is that it looks like a barbarous imitation, so thats what I'm going with, my first gut feeling.

I found 2 others "scrappies" and my friend also found 1 I will post later. We were on a permission near Carnumtum so I'd be surprised if it were an imitation. What is a mule?

Rebbel31,

Nice hunt, the bell you found has some awesome patina on it. Good luck with your hunts. Walt

Two very nice finds, sure hope the Roman coin is authentic! :icon_thumleft:

I think you mis-understand, barbarous imitations are locally minted coins filling in for the short fall of Roman minted coins at the time. Like Cru'dad stated, minted around AD275-85.
If you do understand this, WHY not an imitation?? (we find loads all the time, nearly every outing)
A Mule is a rare coin that should not really exist as its the Obverse of 1 type mixed up with the Reverse of another.

Hey Cru thanks for the clarification. I thought you meant a fake coin, which would have been strange. That's interesting though and good to know. That would be cool if it was a mule. Guess we'll never know. Tks again for the good info. I'm super happy with it!

There is enough showing to be sure either way, just need a Roman Coin Expert to look at it.

Wow ... great finds !

Anybody know anything about the bell? I have no idea

Yes, its a late 18th-19th C carriage bell, went on the horse drawn carriages in sets of 4 or more. This was to make sure people walking got out of the way.

Cool thx. Reckon those were some loud jingling buggies.
