My first Civil War Button

It seems most of the posts are from the coin hunters, I know there are a few relic hunters here too, so I thought that I would add my Civil War button to the mix. I found this while hunting Saturday morning with a hunting buddy that has a lot more experience than I do. He seemed to get a little excited when I showed him what I found.

The pics are before I cleaned it up, I forgot to take pics after cleaning. It is an eagle “D” button with a makers mark of Canfield Bro & Co Baltimore. I don’t know a lot about buttons any information would be greatly appreciated.

For you coin hunters all I found was 11 cents, a 1958 dime that has turned almost brick red, and a 1928 wheat.

I was so excited about the button I forgot to clean up the coins.

The Canfield Bro. & Co. backmark (Albert's #DR 4A1) dates it c. 1850-66.

It generally books around $75-100.

The "D" in the shield stands for Dragoons . As far as the backmark, I can not help you ...I dont have a button book here.

Is this a Union Button? I looked up the number and it shows it to be a Federal listing.
I found this in a confederate cavalry camp. I know that the Dragoons were cavalry could this be a case of a Federal solder that went back south for the war or Southern scrappiness, using whatever they could find to hold themselves together. Camp dates to 1864.

I forgot to mention it is 20mm to 21mm across. It is hard to tell due to the corrosion.
