Nice finds those fatty's are hard to come by. I don't see to many of them.
2-Years ago was the first I even heard of one.

The wheatie with the nail is weird. I wonder what was up with that? ???

I like the copper ring, too. I'm not sure, but wern't they pretty popular during the Civil War times?

It is thicker than a normal penny, almost as thick as a nickel. Don't ever be affraid to ask if your not sure there are alot of great people here that are always willing to help. I've been at this game for 8 years and still have questions and always get answers here.

Re: My First "Fatty" 1859

Thanks. I figured it was something like that.
Is this a feature of a particular date range or a random kind of thing?

Re: My First "Fatty" 1859

Congrats on the fatty! I've yet to see one. Yours looks in real good shape in the pic. Maybe if I lose some weight? :D

Re: My First "Fatty" 1859

ceejay, The indian cents that were made from 1859 to early 1864 were thicker and were called nickels or Nicks even though they were only one cent. In mid 1864 they changed to a thinner one and they were called white cents. 5 cent nickels started in 1866 and were Shield nickels.
