Well today would definitely be considered my most exciting day of metal detecting. My uncle does Real Estate and had a few old homes he said I could check out. As soon as I pulled up I knew it was pretty old. I walked around to the back yard to start there, and the second signal I dug was a 1906 Indian Head! At first I thought it was a wheat, but in the right light I could definitely see the Indian Head shape on the front. I felt like climbing a tree! These pennies are probably my favorite coin of them all.

A few hours later I decided to hit the back yard more thoroughly, and found an old military button about 20 feet away from the hole that had the penny. I haven't researched it much, but it looks a lot like this one. US Army Brass 7 8 Uniform Coat Button Marked Gemsco N Y | eBay

The only cleaning I've done is just some warm water/dish soap soaking. Any suggestions? I really have no idea how to clean old coins/buttons. I've heard lemon juice or olive oil soaking? Any insight is helpful!

Thanks for reading!

EDIT: Added a couple pics after cleaning a little.

Congrats on your 1st indian penny. Found my 1st indian 3 days ago, very exciting.

Congrats.Still looking for my first one.HH

Congrats! My first was also a 1906.

Congrats...gl in your hunts !!!

Pick the old spots and you will have a lot of fun.

I always clean my coins with hot peroxide...just nuke some peroxide in the microwave for about 30 sec then drop the coin in for another 30 sec for each side. Take it out, dab it dry, repeat as necessary.

Another method I've heard of success but haven't tried is using tinfoil to heat some olive oil on a stovetop and putting coins into the oil for a bit.

Congrats on your first Indian Head! They're my favorite coin too.

EDIT: The peroxide method should be safe for your button too.

Electrolysis, since most of the coins we find, due to their condition aren't what collectors call "MS-65", etc., they have very little numismatic value per se.

Grade notwithstanding, that is not true. I sold a dug penny for $1,200 last year.

Congrats, nice finds!
