I been working parks and ball fields most of the summer but today I decided to go try out a site in the woods. And wouldn't you know it....found my first LC. It looked great when it came out of the ground but as it dries out it's flaking and crumbling. Any advise on how to clean/preserve my best coin find? Here's a pic when I dug it...

Nice!!! I have never found a large cent. Congrats

Congrats on your first large cent. Where in Maine are you ? I get over there 2-3 times a year.

Bob I am from midcoast maine. I've found lots of old coppers and the key is to keep them moist. Bring a case that you can seal up with you. If you find anything good put it in the case and throw some dirt in with it. These coins and relics get very comfortable in there environment and are often there a couple hundred years. They do crazy things when you take them out. The dirt will keep them moist and comfortable. When you get it home and get it cleaned to your liking there's a product called Coincare that you can apply to keep it from flaking. Here's a couple that I used it on. Please dont hesitate to ask me any questions. What part of Maine? image-1112107419.webp image-2948010738.webp

Thanks for the replies! After I posted this I went searching here for cleaning methods. I saw a thread called cleaning lc's and it's cooking in hot peroxide right now. Not gonna leave it in there too long as I ruined a dandy button when I forgot about it overnight.
dig kzoo...it was about 6" and think the date is gone....fingers crossed.
I'm in the Bangor area. Whereabouts do I find the coincare stuff you mentioned Ahab? And a great tip on the container. By the time I got home there were big green chips missing off the coin. Wasn't thinking and put it in my pocket with other coins. :(

I have some distilled water handy as i'm soaking some ancient roman coins. Should I soak the LC untill I get a preservative? Or just let it dry.

Bob I get it from a buddy that owns a coin shop but I'm sure it can be ordered or found at any coin shop. I always use peroxide on my coppers but I do it in short sessions and I never get the hp too hot. You can also use chap stic or Vaseline to keep the coin moist but I prefer the coin care. Don't feel bad man I've screwed up a lot of em. Experience is the best teacher :-) I'm i. Topsham

This is as far as I got with it. It's pretty toasted but I am absolutely thrilled to have found it.
