I also found this with my buddy NJLargeCent about a week ago. This is my first button of this type. Hoping the experts here can give me a date range. It's a heavy little thing at 5.8 grams and 20.5 mm in diameter. Notice the unever cast lip. It had a square shank that has a hole drilled in it. Appears to have a plain front. Cool button for sure. Thanks for any info.

Nice find Erik in NJ!

Nice drilled eye shank Erik. Maybe you could show a side view of the shank. I believe these buttons were pre-1800, and maybe went back to the Rev War period but not any older.

Here you go Bill. Here's a pic I took with my iPhone--not the best, will try to get a better one tonight. Thanks for the info!

I'm not sure about the colour, which bothers me, for a 17th C Button, but if it were a UK find & normally decorated on the front, I would go with it. Otherwise pre-1800 is a safe bet.

WICKED button brother!!! Keep at it.. CONGRATS... HH

I'm not sure what the base metal is, but it's quite heavy for it's size. I had it in boiling peroxide a bit...I suppose I could try cleaning it up a bit more. There may have been a design or gilt at one point. Any suggestions for cleaning or just leave it alone?

I don't think cleaning will make any difference on this one. The decor is normally pretty deep & visible, although I have not had/seen a plain version, I guess its possible. See above for a similar type.

Erik, interesting! I have found something almost identical. I'll take pics of it when I get home.

Hi Grant--I have never found one of this type yet up in our area...the eldest I have found here are the soldered on loop back flat and dandy buttons, so this one was kind of a treat. Looking forward to your pic.

Very nice:icon_thumright: Congtratulations:icon_thumright:

Erik, I'm embarrassed to say I don't have a log of this find, nor can I find it my usual group shots from each hunt. That being said, I'm 90% sure I found it in Mount Holly, NJ where I found the KGII. I'll go back through all my notes.

Erik, here are pics of the one I found. I was just looking at it this weekend thinking a) what are you, and b) can I clean you any more to bring out detail? You've answered A, but for B I think it's as good as it's going to get.

Hi Grant...never quite seen a button like that one. It's not a one piece cast button as the front is wrapped with I believe some sort of finer metal. Not too sure about the shank either as it looks square, but it seems to cover a large area. I hope someone here can ID it. Are you sure it's a button? Nice find tho' bro'!!

Well dang. It looked similar enough. No idea then what it could be. I tried really hard to get detail off the front, but no luck.

It's a cool "button" -- I'd put it on the "What Is It?" forum and see if someone can give you a definitive answer. I'm not convinced that it's a button, but it looks old. Rosette maybe?

Funny, I was just Skyping with NJLARGECENT and I suggested rosette as well. I will get a weight on it and post it.

Another great find, Erik! The late-1700's date suggestions sound about right for the site. Glad to be there with you to see it freshly unearthed. Shall we find more?
