Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Searched my first old researched home after gaining permission. House was built in 1713. Fellow detectorist and I had a great day. I found my first silver, a 1939 quarter and my first copper! :headbang: I was thrilled. my old 4900/D pro plus came through. Also found first square nail, plated spoon, and a .45 hollow point slug along with lots of junk. I pretty much dig everthing unless it's a wide object.

I can make out a figure on the copper and I think it's a 1700 King George Farthing. The sitting lady with plant in right hand and spear in left hand. Should I attempt to clean it or will that devalue? It appears in rough shape so I'm not thinking it will.

Hi Louie,
Congratulations as those are some wonderful finds from a researched & permissioned site! I would hold off cleaning the farthing till you have some experienced folks answer you post. Ironpatch here on Tnet would be a good person for you to contact as he has a good deal of experience with old coins!

A 4900D, my my that does take me back aways! The 6000D I have is actually a replacement for the one that was stolen along with the car it was in. The machine was so dear to me I wanted another just in case I decided to go play with nostalgia. Those old analog units still work great!
Keep having fun, doing the research and you will do really well Again with your great machine!...............................63bkpkr

Home run on first permission hunt, nice. Now get back in there and find some more.

Awesome coins

Measure and weigh your copper then post the results please!

measurement is 1.11-1.12 inches (28mm) and weight is .2 ounce

actually after looking at more pictures I would say the lady resembles the George II half pence.
