Found my first piece of petrified wood this morning while walking along a saltwater river after a storm in an area not known for petrified wood. It was by itself with no other pieces around. At first I thought it was a chunk of drift wood but it was the wrong color compared to the other wood laying around and had already begun to dry out. I picked it up and immediately knew what it was as it is very hard, dense, and heavy like a chunk of marble. Has tree knots on both sides.
So far I have only rinsed the beach sand off of it.
Recommendations as to how to clean it further and do I need to seal it with anything?
