Was Mding around an old house this evening and picked up some clad and other junk. As i was leaving i ran the detector beside a fence that seperates the home property from an old bldg. I was getting a mixed signal jumping from penny to 50. Dug down about 2 inches in gravel and out popped this 1877 Seated dime. YIPEEEEEE!! Can't wait to go back. Any idea's on how to make this thing shine or at least get that black off? HH

Nice way to start off with Silver! :o ;D ;D

You might want to just leave it the way it is. Looks fine. If you want it to look shiney you might try some silver polish. You might need several coats but it is a fairly gentle way. Check the cleaning section of this site.

Good luck on more.

Thanks guys. I would have never expected to find anything that old. I'm still grinning ear to ear over it. ;D
I'm going to go back tomorrow and spend a little more time out there. Ill let you guys know what i come up with.

If you feel like you have to clean it (but I really suggest you don't), the do this. It's easy. Take an empty soda can, turn it upside down and place some white vinegar in the indentation. Place the coin in there and let it sit for 15 minutes or so. Tkae out and rub getnly on soft cloth.

This will remove tarnish. Rinse it off. Keep in mind that ANY rubbing, however gently will leave micrscopic scratches in it. So if it's of value don't clean it.

Nice find. I still haven't made it out of the 1900s.

That is a very good first silver...much better then a silver rosie most of us start out with

Very nice first-- I've had my MD bounce on the ID before and been pleasantly surprised!

nice finds, place in palm of hand, wet with water, pour some baking soda on in, add little more water to get a pasty mixture, rub between index finger and thumb.

sonnds nasty, but spit shine works awesome on most silver coins, and no damage,,, ;D ;D

If it were a Carson City mint mark it could be worth several hundred dollars. Otherwise, there are many from this year on ebay selling for prices from a few dollars to 20 or so...nice find though!

Sweet find!

My oldest silver (after decades of digging) is also 1877.

Congrats on a great piece of silver!

Here is another pic after using home made electrolysis.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I went back to the house and found a few more pennies ranging from 1961-1975. There is another house sitting right beside the RR tracks on Main St. that was built in 1860, but no one lives in it. I'm going to go to the Court House and see if i can find out who owns it. Hope that i get permission because it sure looks like a good place. I'll keep you posted. HH
