Detector(s) used
Equinox 800, Garrett AT Max, Garrett AT Pro, with stock coil
AT PRO Pointer, NEL Storm coil, Garrett 5 X 8 coil, 9 X 12 Garrett concentric coil, Nel 6.5 x 9 coil for the Max
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I received my Nox 800 and got chance to give it try this weekend. My first thoughts when putting the unit together how easy it is to connect the coil to the control box compared to the Garrett AT and AT Max, the Garrett's are a true pain in the rear. The control box is secure to shaft not connected by flimsy plastic strip. Light weight of the Nox, easy to swing. Different tones, the difference in tones in all metal mode compared to the AT-Max. Over all I feel the Equinox is far better in general feel, appearance, and overall performance.

So far i have ran the Nox in Park 1 I have not changed ay of the settings yet, right now I'm digging all signals in order to get idea of the different signals. So far, I really like the Nox, have always been a Garrett user, without a doubt the Nox has changed my mind about the AT-Max, I was very disappointed with the Max from the very start just have felt it did not stack up to the upgrade that it was supposed to. I’m still supporter of Garrett equipment just think that Garrett really missed the boat with the AT-Max. If the Nox keeps performing the way it has over the past couple days it will be my go to detector. Looking forward to reading what settings and custom programs others are using.

Happy hunting to all

Hal

That’s great Hal. Glad to read you like the 800. I took the Equinox out for the first time and retrieved my lost wedding ring in the garden. So it was a good sign of my future with the 800. Best of luck!

Hal - you are breaking it and yourself in just right. Don't do too much out of the gate until you get comfortable with the tones and targets. Then you can start playing around. On this detector, think of each mode as a detector in itself. Get used to one mode at a time and if you feel you have got it pretty much down then feel free to move on, if you wish. Also, since the detector is multifrequency you should be able to hit many different targets even if you just stick with one mode so do not feel you are missing out just because you are staying in Park 1 or whatever. Got questions, come on back and post them here. Good luck and happy hunting with your new toy.

Congrats on getting your 800. I was an ATP user, and really liked it. Was thinking for a short period of time on getting the ATmax, but for whatever reason never did.
VF's suggestions are the way you should start with EQ, and I would like to add something. If you have an area that you've researched and hunted before, and even if you know it has been pounded by other's, or yourself, take your 800 there. Steps to take everytime. Turn it on:laughing7: duh, noise cancel, and ground balance, and be sure to turn the volume up to 25. I made the mistake of not maxing the volume when I first started with my 600, and found out I was missing deeper targets, but that might be because of the corded phones that came with it. Next, put it in Park 1, and don't make any more change's. (Although, I did turn threshold up so I could just barely hear the hum, personal preference I guess)
What I do, is when I hear a good signal, I'll switch to Park 2, just to get an idea how it picks up the signal, and then switch back to park 1. That way you'll get a good idea of which mode works better for what your looking for. In my case, it was silver that I knew should be there, (and this is after I pounded with the AT). Another suggestion is even though your 800 has blazing recovery speed, that doesn't mean you can swing at light speed, like some of the youtube vids show. You still have to swing at a normal pace, maybe 2 to 3 seconds, or you can miss targets. The recovery speed is great, but is more useful for determining the separation between good and bad targets that or close together. That's where you will see the unmasking capabilities.

This setup is just my personal opinion on how to start, but if you start messing around with all the more advanced settings right off the bat, you won't understand that the preset's are pretty darn good already. I know, because I have a pocket full of silver's , wheats, and clad , that the AT didn't even give me an inkling that they were there. This was just one site that I refused to believe there wasn't more silver at. And I still think the AT is a good machine, but now I'm wondering if I even had it turned on:laughing7:.

Enough rambling. Give it a shot, and see how it works out for ya. The word "HYPE" that has been given this machine, can no longer be used. It's the real deal! And only the "USER's no that.

Good Luck:icon_thumleft:

Thanks guys on the great advice, I will continue to hunt in Park 1 until I better learn all the tones on the Equinox. One other thing I plan to do is set up some know targets and see how the different sounds are. After getting the headphones charged and the detector charge I went out in the yard and found a dime and pull tab with in 30 seconds of swinging the coil LOL. My yard has been well hunted by the AT Max and the AT Pro. I'm sure I will have lots of questions as I use my new toy, this is a great place to get those answers.

congrats.

looks like your on your way.

its a machine that was designed to hit most of the markets targets. where the rubber meets the pavement , is in its use. it is a user friendly machine with most of the heavy lifting done for you in the 600 and 800...its mostly a turnkey detector that will encompass a high percentage of hunting environments with as little input from the user as possible. you can tinker with a few things to personalize its profile to your preference but it won't let you stray to far from its main objective.
kind of like flying a drone....you don't fly it it flies it self you just tell it where to go, so to speak. if you ever get to far of the beaten path with its settings just reset
it and begin again.
the learning curve can be as steep as you like....refer to the manual often and enjoy.

It is a nice machine.
The thing I miss from my CTX is the adjustable rod for transportation and carrying.
You never know how much you miss it until it isn't there anymore.

It sure like Dimes! I haven't dug a target that was solid 26/27 that wasn't a dime yet. At the parks I feel like I'm finding dimes that other's missed because the quarters are gone...hmm

I heartily concur. Hit thirteen dimes today in backyards of vacant homes on the Military Base we are located on. Fifteen copper pennies, 4 quarters, and two wheaties as well. But like you said, the 26/27 numbers got to the point where I just KNEW it would be another dime. (This was not the first time I've cleaned up on dimes with the 600 either). The two Rosies and one Merc that I pulled this week rang higher numbers.
Park 1, NC and GB, 50 tone, and 20 sensitivity.
