I dug this hatchet head about a week or so ago, and decided to give preservation a try. I cleaned it with water, scrubbed it with a wire wheel on my electric drill, dried it in the oven for a few hours (lowest heat setting), and coated it with three coats of Extend. It looks a bit rough on the outside, but I don't think it will rust anymore. I'm doing all of my cannon ball fragments too, and am working on a HUGE axe head I found. Will post more when I get them done. Enjoy.

Cleaning iron is the fun part of metal detecting. Enjoy.
