I finally assembled my Minelab GT. It was really difficult using precious leisure time I normally would spend detecting with my Tesoro but messing with new machines is also fun.
I looked over the manual and also read the various forum postings. It wasn't too difficult to assemble. I got it right about the 3rd try.
My first impression was this is a quality piece of equipment. Minelab puts a lot into making these, that's for sure. No cheap Chinese rig here.
I didn't even check the settings but turned it on and swung an Indian cent past the coil. She sang me a sweet melody. I haven't heard that sound since my Excalibur back in 2005. I held the penny about the maximum distance my Excal could air detect a coin that size and got a very loud signal. I then proceeded to move it out farther and still a great signal. I found a solid air distance signal of from 12 to 14 inches from the stock 10" Tornado coil. Well, this is sure different from my old Excalibur! With it I got an air test of maybe 7 inches max on a copper penny.
I checked the GT settings and it was on discriminate mode, full vol (I was using headphones so I wouldn't drive the wife nuts), iron mask, at about 12:00 sensitivity.
Okay, now for detecting out in the real world.
Next time part 2.
