Our Church has a "Penny Jar" that people put loose change in for Mission projects. When it gets full (or too heavy for some people to carry), I take it home and roll it all up and take it to the bank. I bring them paper money back and we start all over again. I took the jar home Sunday and started going through it Sunday night. I finished last night.
I was surprised to find an 1891 Indian Head Cent in the jar. This is my third Indian Head from circulation in 2007. I usually get 2 - 3 per year, but never this fast! I also got 5 Wheat Cents, a South Africa 2 cent, and a Netherlands 10 cent. You never know what you are going to find in there.

Actually, I am one of the people that does count the collection. There are a group of us and we rotate. Unfortunately, there is very little in the way of cash, let alone change anymore. Almost the entire collection is checks. I have found some old coins that way, too. About 5 or 6 years ago, there was someone that put $2 in their envelope each week and it was almost always silver halves. After buying a few of them, I had the treasurer contact the person and give them the names of a couple of coin stores to sell the silver to instead of spending it. I still don't know who it was, but I did find out that it was an older person that was having trouble making ends meet, which was what I suspected.
When my grandfather started collecting coins in 1958, my grandmother became the treasurer for their Church so that he could go through the collection each week. That was in the "old days" when she would bring the collection home and count it after Sunday dinner. I remember helping many times when I was young.
