These items were found in an area that was farmland back at the start of the revolutionary war (and fairly close to where the first shots were fired by the Patriots) so who knows how old or new they are.

The first set contains some sort of cap, a sewing bobbin?, and a whatsit.

The second set is a buckle that almost looks like a womans ponytail clasp, but its pretty heavy.

Also included is a buckle.

One of your items looks like a very corroded shotgun shell brass, minus the paper or plastic.

Hmmm, that's not what I see. Looks more like a machine part where a drive belt would sit, IMO.

The first buckle does look like a large shoe buckle due to the pronounced curvature.

The piece with the groove resembles a rest, but for what I have no idea.

Very interesting finds. Hope to see more of your whatzits as they are dug up.

Hey GypsyHeart, I think you're right about the large brass shoe buckle!

I've done some surfing and it looks like buckle #26 on this page:
http://www.netmarshall.co.uk/bucklepage20.htm

"ARTOIS SHOE BUCKLES - (no's 26-29)
These large rectangular and highly curved buckles date from the 1770's - 1790's. They are named after the Comte d'Artois who as French Ambassador to England introduced them into this country. They can be plain (no.26), decorated (no.27), or more commonly openwork (no's 28-29). "

Thanks for helping identify it!!

Check out this page for a picture of what this shoe buckle probably looked like.

The rectangular thing with the wide opening looks like part of a welder's hood. But I can't figure out what that rusted piece is that is stuck to it? Monty

Hiya Monty,

I think that the retangular curved thing has been pretty solidly identified as an old shoe buckle.

Someone else suggested that the small brass piece with curves on either side looks like a scope mount. I'll have to see if I can dig up anything on that.

Thanks for looking, and HH!

Re: My Whatsits

the round thing doesnt look like a shotgun shell to me, looks more like a pulley of some kind because it has raised edges on both sides,, think they right about the buckle, not sure what the other peice is....

Hiya Michelle,

That long piece is actually rather small....

I've now realized I needed something else in the pics to relate size, however the 3rd pict down shows the item being held vertical by a pen clip.
