looks like the keys they used to give with paint. so you could open them....

Thats from a really old automotive air cleaner, that piece had a threaded end that went into a clamp that held the air cleaner onto the carburetor.

Thanks for all the help. The "key" appears much older. It is cast iron, and it was found on the site of an old grist mill and saw mill. Later the mill became a textile factory, and later still became a factory for manufacturing wood working machines, and bicycles.

Well if you’re sure it’s cast iron, then I change my vote to it being the handle of a stove damper.
