dug this yesterday in a field, the Large cent is for size reference. The brass item swivels.....looks like a buckle of some sort hooked to the loop.....I am clueless on this one

It looks like something I have seen on harnesses.

I can't find a pic of it, but I believe a buggy shaft fits thru the ring and a leather strap runs over the horses back and buckels thru the top piece. I could very well be wrong tho.

I agree, or maybe to pull a litter or sled.

I think it is a gag swivel of some sort, but I can't find an exact one in my books just yet.

Yep! Creskol got it. Gag swivel. Part of a harness bridle.

I believe it's used to transfer the lead reins back to the driver on a 4+ team on a wagon or buggy
