✅ SOLVED Mystery button...bicentennial ?

Hey, all
Dug up a button at an old state hospital site...it is the size of a dime, looks like copper and has "liberte" written on it which I think is the french spelling, 1776 at the top and 1976 at the bottom...thanks for any ideas. Nothing on the back.

Sears had a line of denim in 1976 that used this button. This is one example of several items I found for sale between Ebay, Worthpoint, Etsy, etc.
