I found this neat little item yesterday and am perplexed. As you can see it says "THE KING" and has what appears to be a small lion engraved on it. It also appears to be gold plated. Some basic Google image searches yielded no ID, so I call upon the experts here on TN!

hmmm. Check this out: hnwhite.com

It could be a piece of an old musical instrument. This would be consistent with the location, since bands would play there during special events...

Could it be the back of a rivet type button or snap like a top button on a pair of jeans?

Ain't that the thing that the straps hook to on bib overalls ?

Here's what I find out the king is an old musical instrument company from the 40s and 50s or earlier started in Cleveland Ohio I think. I believe that could be one of the keys or buttons on the top of an old coronet or like a trumpet. Good luck hope this helps. According to the "size scale" object in the photo, which is marked 1CM (presumably, 1 centimeter), the circular portion of the unidentified object is somewhere between .4-in and .5-inch wide. That's too small to be a musical instrument's button/key-top. So I am in agreement with Indian Steve... it seems to be "the back of a rivet type button" -- also known as a tack button. It is the tack component, which during the button-manufacturing process gets pushed very tightly into a tube on the back of the button's front. See the photos below.

Thank you everyone for the input! We have an answer! After emailing back and forth with a collector of H.N. White instruments, he informed me that it is a decorative rivet button from an early H. N. White instrument case and that it is gold plated. This is a tiny, crappy photo, but you can see similar buttons on this H. N. White instrument case photo I found online here: http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/images/g/910AAOSwZG9WkaC1/s-l225.jpg

HH!
