This is simply the most brutalized coin I've ever seen....
Here's the facts:
1) Site has produced other equally old US coinage, large cents to 1824
2) Site grades into what was a black swamp of vile harsh chemical conditions for 150 years+
3) Was found in the pit where 200 year old tree fell over...MASSIVE trunk 6 feet in diameter.
4) Coin chemical tests good for silver, despite it's appearence
5) Is the exact diameter of Bust Quarter 1818-1838: 1 1/16"
6) Weighs 96 grains, Bust Q weighs 104 grains. This is acceptable, given the amount of wear and loss this coin has experienced
Wanna play with bigger pics?
The big one:

50% size of that one, a bit more managable:

The back has even LESS detail, but a rim is still barely visible.
I THINK this may be the back of the bust Q, I see a couple of details that seem to line up...but as screwed up as this one is it could be anything!
One last fact:
I checked brit coinage, size/weight all wrong.
Anyone want to attempt to ID this one? What a kick in the pants...find a large silver coin in super old site and it ain't got spit for detail!!!!!!!!
