Dug this solid (that I can tell) brass piece in a lot where several Civil War relics were also dug. Nothing too special, a couple bullets, and a couple P-Caps. I am not sure this piece is period but hope to identify so i can either keep cleaning or use as a skipping stone. Any assistance is much appreciated.

The side picture has lettering that spells OFFICIAL. There is more lettering but cannot make out what they are yet.

Man thats a good one right there..
Curious as to what more writing is on the edge.
Is that intact fabric on one side?
very intriguing find.. dont skip it.. lol

Ohhhh wait...
I bet its 1/2 of a official seal.
like the ones a notary would use..
You can still make out some of the detail of what the seal looked like, though its kinda in bad shape.
GREAT FIND!!!

Wow i think you are exactly right. That’s pretty cool. Would love to know how to date them. Will certainly continue cleaning. Will post new pictures if other lettering becomes legible. Thanks very much for the help !!

Great call Buck8point!

Glad to help..
Be very careful with the cleaning..
One side is the Positive (has the relief image) other side is the negative (the engraved side)
Not sure what side you found, but based on the edge work im guessing its the negative side.
wonder if electrolysis would be the best way bring out the subtle details.
Good luck and keep us posted on the results..

I believe it to be a stamp or seal of some sort...nice find! :occasion14:

Nice find. Quick ID. Congrats

Nice little find. Great ID by Buck8point. I remember those, as my mom was a Notary Public for many years (before they went to the ink stamp).

Thanks again and will do. Do you think behind the “fabric/resin” there may be some engraving? I was scared to try and peel it off.
