Look up Garret detectors on the net and I am sure someone there will be able to help you. Garrett has one of the best customer service departments in the business. Monty

There's two models. The Fortune Hunter TR Discriminator P.B. with three knobs and a 7.5"Garrett Mini coil or the Fortune Hunter VLF/TR "Groundhog" P.B. (four knobs and 7.5" Groundhog coil).

The latter one is the famous "Groundhog" model thats sold in thousands throughout Europe back in the late 70's but lacking the meter of the more expensive "Money Hunter" model. As this was in pre I.D. meter times you didn't really need the meter.
If you have the four knob version it has TR discrimination and a seperate VLF ground cancelling mode. In theory you would detect in the all metal VLF mode for maximum depth then flick the bottom left switch on the fromt panel to take you into TR discrimination. In fact you could eliminate iron in the deep non discriminating mode as the coils were wound so that rings/coins/non-ferrous would give a narrow audio response whilst iron and bottle caps gave a wider than the coil width response.
The ground canceling mode would not work well on salt beaches so here you would just use TR and in effect ground balance out the salt by increasing the discrimination to around the foil reject point.

Hopefully you will find a manual at http://jb-ms.com/Detectors/Manuals/
