You will need to measure the inside diameter at the neck (open end) and the over all length with calipers preferably for an accurate ID. Just by looking at the case it looks to be a .22 long or long rifle, although the rim looks a tad large in your pic to me.

I suspect you'll want to know your bullet cartridge-casing's time range. The "P" marking on its base, called a headstamp, means it was manufactured by the Peters Cartridge Company. That firm began doing business under the Peters name in 1887, and its ammunition factory closed in 1944. So, your casing can only have been made during that time range.

I can't believe I am going to question CBG but isn't it a Federal headstamp?

Thanks guys! Sorry about the bad picture, but the headstamp is an "F" Also any info on when this could of been produced would be helpful too.

Tedyoh, according to the guide to Headstamp Codes at the International Ammunition Association, the only American cartridge-maker who used a simple "P" headstamp was the Peters Cartridge Company.
Headstamp Codes - International Ammunition Association

Edit-note:
The cartridge-casing's finder, BFitz96, has now said "Sorry about the bad picture, but the headstamp is an "F".

It sure looked like a "P" in the photo -- which sent me down the wrong research path. Oh well... perhaps the time-dating info on the Peters Cartridge Company's P-marked casings will be useful to somebody here at T-net, someday.
