It is brass. It was dug in NC beside the cape fear river. We have found some revolutionary relics but still not sure what this is. No writing but looks to be a face of some sort on the top.

Looks like a Georgia Bulldog---maybe off a walking stick

Thanks very much all. And you are exactly right. Found out it is to a 1720s Queen Anne period flintlock pistol. Butt cap
