Need help ID'ng military button / pin

I found this beauty last Saturday while poking around a construction site last Saturday (in Alabama). At first I thought it was a button, but upon further review it looks to be some sort of pin (or maybe cuff link). It is brass as far as I can tell and was found in area that has a lot of history. As much as I wish it were of the Civil War era, my natural inclination is that it is post Civil War, however, I wondered if it could have come off of a militia member uniform. There are no writings on the back. Sorry for the less than sharp images, my camera is old. If anyone can help ID this for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking Alabama National Guard.

This is from an 1898 Alabama Military Law book....
