Need Help On Preservation, Storage, Cleaning

I am curious. If I come across relics, coins, silver, or gold and I know it could be in a variety of places (sand, rivers, salt-water, soil) is there a guide or method to preservation of items in terms of moving them from the "dig site" to the home and how do you clean or preserve these items?

I have read a about electrolysis but would it be better off using a ultrasonic jewelry cleaner or am I missing something chemically here?
