Greetings everyone. I am planning to buy my 7 year old son a metal detector for Christmas and I need some help picking out a good one for him. He is pretty small for his age, so I basically want to get the best metal detector that is still small enough for him to handle. Ideally, I'd like to find something that can be shortened/extended so that he can use it into his teenage years and possibly even into adulthood (not to mention that I might use it some too ;D)

As far as price range, I am looking to stay in the $200-$300 range...possibly a little more for the right one. New or used - doesnt matter to me as long as its in good shape.

Thanks in advance for the help. I cannot wait to see the look on his face when he finds his first treasure :)

if that is your price range i would suggest the F2, it is very lightweight at only 2.6lbs and has great reviews!! Its a real coin killer too with great pinpointing!

Digital: Garrett Ace 250

Analog: Tesoro Compadre or better yet a Silver Umax.

Ace 250 would be my choice.... but any of the others are fine too... cheaper yet is the Ace 150 but no pinpointing capabilities.

Do any of these models have an adjustable shaft? My sons height and his ability to handle the detector is as important to me as the actual metal detecting abilities of the unit.

they should all come with an adjustable shaft to accommodate his height
