I really wasn't counting on finding any thing today but got my first silver of 2016 and a thing made of copper, it looks old but I don't know what it is, help is appreciated. I know that the silver thing must be a button, but why make a silver button with no details at all? the button is 16 mm wide and thinn as a hammered coin. The copper thing is 5.5 cm long and 7 mm wide and 13 mm across. I did the spit test on the button and i am sure that it is silver. Sorry some of the pictures posted two times. And upside down.;-)

Here in New England, any type of flat buttons of that size, are almost always plain, even the early 1800s ones that have backmarks and some of these have designs on the backs but plain front..

I have never seen a solid silver one, but I have one that is "layered" silver overlay, not plated. It is also plain

The larger Dandy buttons are likely to have designs

Perhaps the copper item is a chunk of a spoon or fork handle? If so, it would likely have been silver plated, copper being a good base for applying silver to. Looks like maybe a wheat pattern?

Your silver might be a saddle rivet or decoration.

Thanks for the reply ctwoods, the "button" is solid silver. I think that cudamark is on to something because of the way it looks at the back. Nhbenz the copper thing look like it is only broke in the wide end. And it is to heavy and chunky to be a spoon or fork handle, it may be some sort of tool. The pattern looks like handmade and is not the same length on both sides.
