The Rock was about eight inches deep about a 40 on the vdi and non magnetic. How old is that button? And what was that lead thingy used for? Thanks for taking a look and HH
The weight of the rock becomes important, including where it was found. Looks a little like bituminous coal, if so it would be light and soft. Scratches easily. Also could be a black basalt, Michigan should have some of that. That would be my better guess. Button is late 18th to early 19th century and the lead thingie is a lead thingie.
Thanks for the info that might be my oldest button score. It's from my only site where I consistently find older items a few Indian heads from the 1860s a French coin from the 1850s even a gold ring. No silver coins though I figure it's my best spot to find a seated I'll keep hammering it until it's cleaned out thanks again
