Both of these Victorian era cufflinks are considered as 'chain' connections, which is slight earlier than 'rod' connections. Around 1840s/50s, shirts with french cuffs became popular, which called for more elaborate and sophisticated cufflinks. In the 1880s, George Krementz invented a machine (based on a gun shell-fabricating machine) to mass produce cufflinks and buttons.
