Need help with hose saddle buckle

I found this today from a old log cabin that dates late 1700s. I thought it was a horse saddle buckle and still do. But i took it home and cleaned it up. I can see on the back PH or something on it. Is this a makers mark or something that has to do with the owner or farm. Also what period is this. Any help on this would be great. Also the only other thing i found was a 1847 Large Cent. About 10 feet away.
