Need help with my sign...SOON update with some semi cleaned pics!!!

WHITE'S MXT (and man is she hot!)
These are pics before I cleaned with water, does anyone know how to get the thick rust off. Obviously the paint underneith is gone, but I would like to maybe level it out a bit. I know not to use harsh cleaners etc, but do I polish the rust spots, or does that degrade the value of the sign. Also, I need info on sealants. I know I need to seal the sign to stop oxidation. The person I gave the sign to isn't going to put it outside or anything, just want to preserve it. If you want the story, here's the link to the forum...
