That is what is called a Celt and is basically an ungrooved Axe. It was used in woodworking. Also, I doubt there's an actual "thumbprint" on the stone. It looks to be just a depression in the rock. Nice piece. Take it out of your grandpas tool box and put it up somewhere so it doesn't get damaged.
 

Yeap that's a Celt, ungrooved axe..... I have seen many with a dimple in the side like that... Look like the bit end has some damage from use..... John
