Today I hit my own personal ghost town and came out with either a flying eagle cent or a fatty indian (compaired it to my other indian heads post 1864 and this one is thicker and heavier, 4.67 grams vs 3.11 grams). This will be my oldest coin by a few years and would like to know exactly what it is. It has crud on it and cant tell, so my question is, what do ya'll soak your old coins in to 1. get the crud off and 2. see what it is?

I'm afraid I'm going to need a bigger picture. Probably a fattie though.

Heat hydrogen peroxide in the nicrowave til it just starts to boil. Drop the coin in and leave for 10-15 mins. Do other side the same way. Should clean up nice.

Nice find!

Flying eagles were 4.7 grams vs 4.67 grams for the nickel-copper Indian Heads according to coinfacts.

Good luck cleaning it.

Thanks for the replies ya'll, Ill test out the hydrogen peroxide. The coin in this shape isnt worth anything, so testing it wont hurt a bit.

If the hydrogen peroxide doesn;t clean it up enough...try covering it in and let soak in Noxon....its a metal polish that come in a green bottle...let it soak for a couple hours, then when the polish turns blue...gently rub it off and then repeat as needed.
NEVER clean any coin you think may have some value to it, once its cleaned the value plummets..

Going to need a bigger picture. Tried to blow it up in word but could not get a bigger image. Just got really blurry.

well by looking at what little detail there is to the back, the rope border is a tad inset, and the reath around "once cent" is larger and more too it. The front is gone. So it appears to be a flying eagle mostly because of the rope boarder on the indian was on the edge and the eagle is inset some. either way its my oldest coin to date, my last was an 1865,
