Today, in a swamp that borders my neighborhood, I found what I believe is a South Carolina Civil War uniform button. Definitely my best find yet since I've only been detecting for about a month. I'm excited!

Don't know why it turned the picture upside down and I don't know how to fix it. Sorry.

Nice find. A South Carolina button is a good one to have. It is smashed flat but there is good detail there. If it was mine I would soak in lemon juice for about 30 seconds and lightly brush with a soft bristle toothbrush. May be some gold still hiding behind all that crud!

I'll have to get another picture, but I poured a little CLR on it and hit it with a toothbrush. It does have some guilt left, but it looks kinda silver colored.

Here it is now...

Nice button, congratulations! Is it a smashed button or is it a one piece? Can you show a picture of the back?

It's a smashed 2-piece...

Thanks! I have been wanting to find a button since I started at this hobby. Never thought it would be a SC CW button. Actually this is the first and only button that I have found.

Nice Find Thanks for sharing goldnugget I don't have a swamp in my area

Took me years to find my first CS button. Congrats on the spectacular find!

Wow, I feel really fortunate. I have barely been metal detecting for 40 days. Extremely lucky, I guess.

That cleaned up pretty nice. I may have to try that on a couple myself. : )

Very nice! Congrats!

Very Sweet Save! I'm still hunting for my first button, Union or Confederate!

MKW, first off I'd like to Welcome you to the Tnet Forum from Georgia and secondly, "Semper Fi' Devil Dog". You are off to a great start. We have two things in common. The Corps, and our first Confetrit' button. Those South Carolina buttons are great looking, such as the one you found. I found my first Confetrit' button back in the 80's in Atlanta, A South Carolina cuff button. I wouldn't take anything for it. I love the state of South Carolina. I consider it my adoptive state. My Dad was born in Charleston in 1932 and I lived in Beaufort for 3 years while in the Corps 1976-1979. Welcome aboard, and Continued Success to you.
