I had Friday off so my wife and I went to the closest town with a mall (50 miles away). I haven't bank hunted there yet so took $1,000 and warned my wife we would be making some stops along the way.
We went through a small town along the way with 5 banks so started there.
Bank #1 told me someone bought all their halves about 2 months ago and they haven't had any more come in. I figured I was in someone else's territory and then wasn't expecting to find much, but pressed on.
Bank #2 had $50 hand rolled in the vault and another $10 loose in the teller trays. I asked if many people ask for halves and she said almost never, a good sign. All skunks.
Bank #3 only had $11 in halves, no Silver.
Bank #4 had some halves in their counting machine and the teller went to ask if I could buy them. Another teller looked in the half bin, took two items out and told me they couldn't sell coins to non-members. I think I got slimed by the other teller.
Bank #5 $30 in had rolled n the vault a 1 half in the try, again no silver. All the banks after the first one said nobody asks for halves.
Onto the bigger town.
Bank #6 told me no halves. I saw the counting machine in the back and asked if I could buy whatever was in there. She checked and said there was $125.50 and I said I'll take it. She asked another guy how to sell it to me and he wasn't sure. He also said the count might be off so he didn't think they should sell them to me. I told him I knew it may be a couple bucks off but that was fine. He said OK and sold me the bag. 2 1968-Ds and 2 car wash tokens. Each token is good for a $9 brushless car wash so not a bad deal.
Bank #7 said they had $384 but they were loose, I said that was fine. She told me they had to recount them. I figured they were counting and picking out silver since I couldn't see them. Maybe not since I found 1 66, 3 67s, 2 03-Ps, and 2 more car wash tokens.
Bank #8 said "Sure I have halves, how many do you want?". I asked for $350 and got them, all machine rolled. She said she had about $50 more in the vault. I found 1 69-D.
I asked at every bank if they had people come in and buy of drop off halves and all but the first one said almost never so this may be an unhunted area (Other than the tellers). There are a bunch more banks there so I may head back next weekend and try some more. Only 7 40% out of almost $1,000 but the big find may be waiting for me.
