Ah, the game box. I have used them a couple times, shipping a sold lot of small items and a professional boxed horseshoe set (which really was a good shipping price, all that steel from Ohio to Alaska!). Never could find a game that was someone wanted to pay that much for shipping.

They even got shoe boxes

I got a set of horseshoes boxed that will fit perfect also. Im going to like this box for shipping hammers with handles and longer vintage tools, tongs and such.

I was wondering (I'm new to this ebay and shipping stuff) if the item you are going to ship is pretty light, are you better off postage wise to just put it in a plain box of your own instead of buying a flat rate box?

Always. Flat rate boxes are only a good deal if the item is really heavy.

Even if an item is between 3 and 4 lbs, it is cheaper to use large flat rate than weight based priority if going to zone 8

Thank you for that. I just ordered up some regional flat rate boxes. Looks like they will indeed save me money if I can determine best how to use them. I like to send things parcel post but with a premium item you've got to go priority.

Seems more often than not priority is cheep as parcel post. At least from my zip code

The post office has screwed something up. Standard post is the slow mail for going to the post office. Parcel select is the cheaper online version. How much cheaper you ask? .05 cents cheaper. You no longer get a discount through ebay on it and it seems you no longer get an online discount either. I started shipping all my bulky/heavy stuff through fedex. I rarely find a package I send parcel select anymore, most times fedex is cheaper or priority is cheaper. Most times i use parcel select is when the savings are only a few bucks and I don't want to drive to fedex, USPS is much closer to me.
