New or old?

I found this old pinback device at a local thrift shop today. I'm sure the numbers refer to something besides the date, but the piece looks kind of old to me, and I have seen similar devices in books of old military plates. Just wondering what you think!? Thanks!

Depends on what you call old, if you mean is it from 1771, then it is very new. I would say 1970's at the oldest, never heard of any colonial pinned on plate badge things. The font looks modern too. I have no clue what the numbers are for. Good luck IDing it, maybe post it in What is it.

I have to agree - it just doesn't look new. You said you had some books - do they show the pins on the back (holding the 1771 plate) like this one?

I'm going with modern. The style of numbers are a give away.
