Hello everyone, I just got a garrett ace 250 a couple days ago. I took it out for the first time yesterday. I found some trash but that's it. Today I took it to a beach where there's a swimming area. I have had it on all metal and sensitivity at 4 until I become more experienced. I got a bottle cap, pull tab, and another piece of junk. But I got 6 or 7 that went to the silver side and said 8+ so I dug a huge hole in the sand about 12" deep and rescanned it and it said 4 so I dug another 4 and scanned again. Then it said 6+!? A couple holes I dug that said 2 stopped sounding off after I dug em. I scanned the pile of sand and the hole, nothing... I'm having a hard time with finding things after it finds them. I have a pinpointer coming in the mail so I'm sure that will help me out. Any help is appreciated. And also if there is anybody around me that would be willing to meet and show me a few things.

I use a 250 as well and yes this does happen. I dug a 6 inch hole through solid rocks with a pick axe because it said silver. Well I dug about 6 inches down and then it was saying 4 inches down. I ended up digging a hole the size of a basket ball then still said 4 inches down.
I eventually gave up lol. But to answer your question, I know in my area theres black sand everywhere. When the black sand gathers in groups or piles from the rain creating small creeks. It will sound the detector off and when you dig in to the pile of black sand it will disperse and the detector wont read it any more.
I've gotten nickel readings silver readings and gold readings from black sand.

There's wasn't any black sand here. It's just manufactured sand that was hauled in. A lot of drunks party here so I was hoping for some jewelry.

Continue as you do. Each piece of trash you dig now will later help. The 250 is a great learning machine. It has capabilities of its big brothers. Once you receive your Pinpointer you will have better finds and search less. Good luck!
Peace
