I've been in desperate need of a new area to detect. I wasnt planning on returning to this site because it's full of late 1800s/ early 1900s farm iron/ trash, but I went back today. I detected for a few hours and found the usual amount of iron nails and trash but managed to find some unexpected NY militia buttons. These are the best pictures I could take. I'm not sure if these are civil war era or earlier, I would appreciate any information about them. Thanks for looking! Also, I gave the gold gilted button a light cleaning with water, any safe methods for cleaning it further without removing the plating ?
