OK, so we love to spend our summers kayaking up the rivers here in the northeast. I gave my mate a gold panning kit for x-mas...and the bait was set! There's gold around----probably not big nuggets--but a few flakes is a good excuse for an outing. I followed that up with a White's GMT for our anniversary 2 weeks later. Not patient enough to wait for thawed ground, we went out in the backyard in January to test it out. We figured we'd just hit nails and other junk so when the MD went off we took a rock hammer, with a vengeance, to the frozen ground and promptly DESTROYED a beautiful 1930's era art deco copper cosmetic case. Lesson learned! When I get my camera happening, I'll post pics. We should make the banner on WHAT NOT TO DO!

Thanks to everyone on this site for so much valuable info.
